Course Title
Family Policing Law, Policy and Resistance
Department(s)
Description
This course is premised on the contention, championed by many organizers, that the child welfare system operates as a policing system and has a negative and disproportionate impact on low-income communities and Black and brown families. This intensive seminar explores the relationship between policed families and the state through a variety of lenses - historical, legal, political economy, and experiential. Students take on the task of critical analysis through these and other lenses and through engagement with material and guest lecturers. The course is a co-requisite of the Lawyering Seminar III Family Defense Practicum and builds off the clinical work of the Family Defense Clinic.
