Description

Sexuality, Gender Identity and the Law (SGIL) is a seminar course that explores issues related to sexuality and gender identity. The course covers both constitutional and policy-based topics impacting the freedom of LGBTQI+ people, such as the right to express one’s sexuality and gender, the right to work in a nondiscriminatory environment, and the right to be free from criminalization and reproductive oppression. The course also studies religious liberty and “junk-science” claims that are used to undermine LGBTI+ equality and strategies for combatting them. The course devotes significant attention to gender identity issues, including challenges faced by transgender, gender queer, and nonbinary individuals in accessing sex-segregated facilities, adequate healthcare, and equal educational and athletic opportunities.
